NYCT subway logs busiest ridership day since pandemic's start

MTA New York City Transit officials announced yesterday that more subway trips were recorded March 12 than on any other single day since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.

The 1,912,774 paid trips on March 12 surpassed the previous post-pandemic high of 1,881,024 trips logged the day before.

The daily ridership increase comes on the heels of news that the recently passed federal American Rescue Plan includes about $6 billion in funding for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. 

Prior to the pandemic, average weekday ridership totals routinely exceeded 5 million in the subway system. That figure fell by more than 90% to a low of roughly 300,000 daily trips in April 2020 as the number of COVID-19 cases reached their apex in the New York City area, according to an MTA news release.
