NYCT taps Harsco for third-rail-powered rail grinder
advertisement
Metropolitan Transportation Authority New York City Transit recently awarded Harsco Track Technologies a contract valued at nearly $7 million to develop and produce a third-rail-powered rail grinding unit, the company announced May 22.
The contract includes initial maintenance service, spare parts support and an option for two additional units. NYCT personnel would operate the unit to re-contour rail profiles and smooth rail surface corrugations to help abate train noise and improve passenger comfort.
This particular unit would draw power from the subway system’s third rail instead of rail-maintenance vehicles’ usual diesel engines to eliminate engine exhaust emissions.
Harsco anticipates a 24-month engineering and development phase, followed by early 2004 delivery.
