The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) will host a public "listening session" Aug. 22 on its study of a potential extension of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) commuter-rail service from Haverhill, Mass., to the Plaistow, N.H., area.

Conducted by the department in partnership with planning firm Plaistow, Atkinson and Rockingham, the study will analyze potential alternatives for a train station and layover facility, and their impacts, including cost benefits and ridership projections, NHDOT officials said in a press release.

The department also is working with an HDR Engineering-led team to identify possible sites, develop design concepts and analyze their potential impacts. Prior to beginning its work, the HDR team wants to solicit input on the project from area residents and project stakeholders, department officials said.
