The Rio Metro Regional Transit District has scheduled a series of public meetings in October to review a proposal that calls for raising New Mexico Rail Runner Express’ fares.

The proposal was prompted by the “upcoming discontinuation of significant federal funds that are currently being used to pay for Rail Runner service,” New Mexico Rail Runner Express officials said in a prepared statement.

“While an increase in fares may not make up for the complete shortfall, this is just one piece that will help offset the loss of these federal funds,” said Rio Metro Chairman Steve Shaw.

The fare increases are one option being considered to increase Rail Runner revenue, added Dewey Cave, executive director for the Mid-Region Council of Governments in New Mexico.

“The board also voted to create a fiscal sustainability task force to study and provide recommendations,” he said, adding that the task force recently met for the first time and will meet again in October to consider additional recommendations.

The proposed increases in regular and reduced fares vary, depending on zones. The proposal calls for a $2 increase for a one-trip fare and day pass, an $11 hike in the cost of a monthly pass, and a $110 rise in the cost of an annual pass in No. 6 zones for regular fare riders.
