VIA Rail Canada Inc. recently announced plans to build a new station in Oshawa, Ontario. The Canadian government will provide $3 million for the $7 million building, which will be constructed adjacent to the existing station that was built by CN in the 1960s.

VIA Rail is studying design options and expects to select a final design early next year.

As part of a $300 million Kingston Subdivision project, the agency also will add one mainline and a second platform, and reconfigure track in Oshawa. The outdated station couldn’t support the planned infrastructure improvements, according to VIA Rail.

Meanwhile, Canada’s minister of state transport announced long-time businessman Thomas Bennett has been appointed to VIA Rail’s board, and Eric Stefanson and David Hoff were reappointed. They will serve four-year terms.
