New York DOT to study possibility of streetcar service in Brooklyn

On Friday, the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) announced it will start a five-month study to determine the feasibility of creating a streetcar network linking Red Hook with downtown Brooklyn and surrounding neighborhoods.
The study will include community meetings and a technical analysis of the area’s needs and demographics, and will analyze engineering advantages and limitations of any prospective project.
“When completed, a streetcar system in Red Hook has the potential to reconnect this neighborhood with the rest of the city and greatly improve transit options for residents,” said Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez (D-N.Y.) in a prepared statement. “With subway and bus services being drastically reduced in Red Hook, this study will help determine the best way forward to meet Brooklyn’s transportation needs.”
