New York Gov. Cuomo, MTA's Prendergast examine flood-prevention technology

On Hurricane Sandy's one-year anniversary yesterday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Thomas Prendergast toured locations featuring some of the new technology the MTA is considering to bolster its resiliency against future storms.

The MTA is designing solutions to prevent water incursion at the agency's 600 entry points in Lower Manhattan, as well as vulnerable vent plants and openings in other flood prone areas, MTA officials said in a press release.

The MTA also has been researching existing flood mitigation and resiliency systems used in other parts of the world, they said.

"The devastation from Superstorm Sandy affected millions of commuters who rely on the MTA system every day, and while the quick restoration of service was an amazing feat, the real long-term accomplishment will be to harden the network against future storms," said Cuomo.

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan joined Cuomo and Prendergast on the tour.
