New York MTA approves fare hikes

advertisement

Last week, the New York state legislature approved additional funding for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), enabling the agency to avoid drastic fare cuts and service increases. However, the authority still will raise fares in the coming fiscal year, albeit not as steep as the originally proposed hikes of nearly 30 percent.

On Monday, the authority approved a plan to raise base subway fares from $2 to $2.25. MTA Metro-North Railroad and MTA Long Island Rail Road ticket prices will increase between 9.75 and 10.75 percent.

The new commuter-rail fares will take effect June 17, while new subway fares will take effect June 28.
