New York Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) recently awarded a $162 million signal modernization contract to Granite Halmar, a wholly owned subsidiary of Granite Construction Inc.



Under contract terms, Granite Halmar will install new signal equipment and rehabilitate existing equipment on about 20 track miles of the Concourse Line, from 205th Street in the Bronx to 145th Street in Manhattan; reverse signaling on the middle track; construct various station and wayside enclosures; and build a new Master Tower at the Concourse Yard, according to a prepared statement.



The new signal system will comprise field equipment, such as light-emitting diode signals, automatic trip stops, track switches, communication subsystems and code systems. Originally installed in 1931, the existing signal equipment is almost 20 years past its useful life, Granite Halmar said.

Scheduled to be completed in early 2004, the 52-month project serves as the last modernization leg of MTA's 8th Avenue line.
