New York MTA cites carbon emission savings

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) recently had its carbon emissions verified by the Climate Registry and determined that New Yorkers emit 17.4 million fewer metric tons of greenhouse gases because they ride subways, commuter trains and buses instead of driving cars.

The Climate Registry is a non-profit organization that manages the only North American voluntary greenhouse gas registry. Using verified figures and a methodology developed by the American Public Transportation Association, the organization has determined that the MTA enables New Yorkers to emit 8.24 fewer units of carbon for every unit emitted by trains and buses. In total, New Yorkers emit 19.8 million fewer metric tons of carbon a year.

At the same time, MTA’s network of subways, commuter trains, buses, paratransit vehicles, bridges and tunnels release 2.4 million metric tons of carbon annually. The result is a savings of 17.4 million metric tons of carbon through the course of the year, MTA officials said in a prepared statement.
