Yesterday, New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced it awarded a $212 million contract to Lockheed Martin to provide an integrated system designed to improve security throughout the authority’s transportation network.
As prime contractor, Lockheed Martin will design, develop and implement the MTA Integrated Electronic Security System, Command, Communication and Control (IESS/C3) program, which will feature enhanced monitoring, surveillance, access control, intrusion detection and response capabilities. The contractor also will install more than 1,000 cameras and 3,000 sensors throughout MTA’s system, as well as motion and perimeter sensors, intelligent video and closed-circuit television systems.
In addition, Lockheed Martin will establish command, communication and control centers — which will be linked to a new MTA police department mobile command center — as part of an integrated incident response and recovery management system.
“[The contract] enables us to move forward with our plans to create a next generation command and control structure that addresses future needs for hardening our transit system against terror threats and, ultimately, provide a safer environment for MTA customers,” said MTA Security Director Bill Morange in a prepared statement.
Lockheed Martin’s three-year contract includes maintenance options that could extend the program until September 2013. The company’s IESS/C3 team includes ARINC Inc., Slattery Skanska USA Civil Inc., SYSTRA Engineering, Intergraph Corp., Cubic Corp. and Lenel Systems International Inc.
