Rail News: Passenger Rail

New York MTA sells ads on NYCT, LIRR cars to increase revenue

Yesterday, New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced it will introduce new forms of advertising on MTA New York City Transit and MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) as part of an effort to boost revenue.

The inside and outside of a subway train serving the 42nd Street Shuttle is now “fully wrapped” with advertisements for TBS’ Major League Baseball post-season coverage. Although subway car wraps have become more popular with advertisers, this will be the first ad campaign to make use of moving images through video screens, according to the MTA. Screens inside the subway cars will show replays of the previous night’s baseball highlights.

In addition, the exterior of LIRR commuter trains now are displaying advertisements for what is believed to be the first time since railroading began in New York City, MTA officials said in a prepared statement.

“The MTA earns more than $100 million per year from sales of advertising space, mostly through traditional print media, but this traditional advertising has suffered as a result of the recession,” said MTA Chairman Jay Walder. “Our uncertain finances mean that we have to think creatively to maximize the value of our physical assets.”
