New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) recently completed a competitive bidding process with taxi companies that serve MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) stations. The authority sought bids from the cab companies to exclusively serve various stations.

By making 15 sites available to the highest bidder, MTA officials expect revenue from taxi companies to jump 75 percent during the next five years, from $400,000 to $700,000.

“Taxi operators at many of our key stations provide a critical ground transportation link for many of our customers,” said LIRR President Helena Williams in a prepared statement. “This competitive process ensures that these taxi services will continue across the LIRR while maximizing the revenue they generate for the MTA.”

The taxi agreements are part of MTA’s effort to maximize non-fare revenue by continuing to develop its portfolio, including property used by all of its subsidiary agencies.
