Rail News: Passenger Rail

New York, New Jersey passenger-rail project to double capacity

New Jersey and New York’s "Access to the Region’s Core" project will create tens of thousands of new jobs and boost the region's economy, according to a recent economic study. But for commuters, the project also will double passenger-rail capacity between the two states.

New Jersey Transit and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey plan to build a double-tracked Trans-Hudson Express (THE) Tunnel beneath the Hudson River — the second commuter-rail tunnel between the states. The agencies also plan to construct a station adjacent to New York’s Penn Station and add new track along the Northeast Corridor.

The agencies currently are conducting a draft environmental study, which is scheduled to be complete in summer.
