This week, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) is celebrating the three-year anniversary of the opening of an AirTrain Newark extension to the Northeast Corridor.

Linking New York City and New Jersey with Newark Liberty International Airport, the $415 million extension opened in October 2003, providing a direct connection between the airport, and New Jersey Transit and Amtrak trains.

AirTrain opened in 1996 as an airport monorail system. Currently, about 30,000 daily passengers use the monorail to travel between terminals and parking areas, rental car facilities and hotel shuttles. About 4,000 daily passengers ride trains on the extension.
