Earlier this month, three transit agencies reached significant mile markers. On Dec. 11, the Charlotte Area Transit System registered the 10 millionth rider on the LYNX Blue Line. Since the light-rail line opened in November 2007, daily weekday ridership has averaged about 15,000.

Meanwhile, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey marked the 6th anniversary of AirTrain JFK service on Dec. 17. The service to and from John F. Kennedy International Airport has boosted annual ridership from 2.6 million in 2004 to 5.3 million in 2009.

Finally, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) marked its 30th anniversary as a rail and bus service provider on Dec. 18. MARTA launched rail operations on the East Line from the Avondale to Georgia State station on June 30, 1979.
