New York-area port authority OKs public meeting on proposed fare, toll hikes

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) has approved Staten Island Borough President James Molinaro’s request to hold a public meeting to discuss the agency’s proposed toll increase at the tunnels and bridges between New York and New Jersey.

At the Aug. 16 meeting, PANYNJ officials will discuss a proposal to raise the tolls and several fares — including some charged by the Port Authority Trans-Hudson rail service — in order to address budget constraints and infrastructure needs. Earlier this month, the authority proposed a two-phase toll and fare increase to fully fund a new $33 billion 10-year capital plan.

The proposal follows the authority’s $5 billion cost-cutting plan, started in 2008, designed to better manage resources during a time of economic recession while furthering an $11 billion plan to rebuild the World Trade Center and a $6 billion plan to improve security, PANYNJ officials said in a prepared statement.
