On Feb. 25, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s (PANYNJ) board awarded a $542 million contract to a Skanska joint venture for a World Trade Center Transportation Hub project — the largest contract let to date for the hub, which is expected serve more than 200,000 commuters daily after it opens in late 2011.

Skanska USA Civil Northeast Inc./Granite Construction Northeast Inc./Skanska USA Building Inc. will build the PATH Hall in the hub’s “West Bathtub,” according to PANYNJ. The work calls for constructing four rail platforms installing HVAC systems, and completing fire protection and plumbing work.

In April 2009, PANYNJ modified its contract with Phoenix Constructors JV — which at the time was the hub’s general contractor and construction manager — so the agency could bid out all future contracts separately. PANYNJ’s board previously awarded a $338.8 million contract to DCM Erectors to furnish and erect 22,305 tons of structural steel for the hub — almost twice the amount of steel used to build the new Yankee Stadium.
