Newark airport's AirTrain project issues RFP

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) has issued a request for proposals (RFP) to four teams that have been shortlisted to compete for a contract to design, build, operate and maintain AirTrain Newark at Newark Liberty International Airport.

The shortlisted teams are: Liberty AirTrain Partners (including Skanska USA Civil Northeast Inc., SNC-Lavalin Project Services Inc., COWI North America Inc. and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America Inc.); Liberty Integrated Connectors (including Dragados USA Inc., Halmar International LLC, Schiavone Construction Co. LLC, HDR Engineering Inc. and BYD Transit Solutions LLC); Liberty Mobility Express 
(including Kiewit Infrastructure Co., Tully Construction Co. Inc., AECOM USA Inc. and Alstom Bombardier Transportation USA Inc.); and Tutor Perini/Parsons JV (including Tutor-Perini Corp., Parsons Construction Group Inc. and DCCCA1 Inc.).

AirTrain Newark will replace a transit system that debuted in 1996 but has become outmoded and unreliable over the years, PANYNJ officials said in a news release. A groundbreaking is expected in mid-2022.

The new rail link will be a 2.5-mile elevated guideway designed with seamless connections to other forms of transportation. Features will include modern wayfinding, digital tools and amenities in stations and in vehicles. AirTrain will connect to the new 1 million-square-foot terminal that's replacing the existing terminal and a new consolidated rental car facility.
