North Carolina Railroad Co. (NCRR) recently contracted Steer Davies Gleave to determine potential ridership and revenue for a 140-mile commuter-rail corridor between Greensboro and Goldsboro.

The study is a follow-up to an NCRR engineering analysis conducted last year that concluded commuter trains and freight trains could co-exist in the corridor if infrastructure were improved. The study also is part of NCRR’s capital investment planning for 2030.  
 
Steer Davies Gleave will create ridership models and compile revenue forecasts for four potential commuter train routes in 2012, 2017 and 2022. The study area also includes 18 state and private universities within two miles of the corridor.

NCRR plans to release study results in second-quarter 2010. The railroad will fund the $300,000 study with revenue from an operating agreement partnership with Norfolk Southern Railway.
