Rail News: Passenger Rail
Earlier this month, San Diego’s North County Transit District (NCTD) awarded a contract to West Coast Rail Constructors to build the SPRITNER commuter-rail line’s 1.7-mile San Marcos Loop, which will serve the California State University-San Marcos campus.
The $23.5 million contract is 15.7 percent higher than the original budget estimate of $20.3 million because of increased steel, concrete and fuel costs, according to a prepared statement.
A joint venture comprising Fluor Enterprises and FCI Constructors, West Coast Rail Constructors will be responsible for building five cast-in-place concrete box girder bridges, a new frontage road to provide access to properties along the alignment and a new station at the university. The contractor also will complete track and signal work for the loop.
In July, NCTD awarded a contract to West Coast Constructors to build the 22-mile SPRINTER mainline and stations. The $375.5 million project includes reconstructing 22 miles of railroad in an east-west rail corridor owned by NCTD and building 14 stations.
The line will serve the cities of Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos and Escondido.
