Last month, San Diego’s North County Transit District (NCTD) issued a notice to proceed on SPRINTER commuter-rail construction to West Coast Rail Constructors, a joint venture comprising FCI Constructors Inc. and Fluor Corp.

The firms will reconstruct about 22 track miles in an existing east-west rail corridor owned by NCTD. The project includes removing existing facilities, and replacing track, ties, ballast, bridges, culverts, grade crossing equipment, communication and control systems, signaling systems and right-of-way fencing. The contractors also will build 14 stations featuring platforms, canopies, adjacent parking lots, landscaping, lighting and surveillance equipment.

The $375.5 million commuter-rail line will run along the Highway 78 corridor, serving Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos and Escondido. NCTD also will build a 1.7-mile spur to serve California State University’s San Marcos campus. The project is scheduled to be complete in late 2007.
