The Northstar Corridor Development Authority (NCDA) plans to study the feasibility of using biodiesel fuel for the proposed Northstar commuter-rail service.

NCDA officials will analyze fuel efficiency, locomotive manufacturers and Federal Transit Administration requirements. Officials also will determine the fuel’s impact on capital and operating costs, and the environment. NCDA plans to complete a preliminary report by late spring.

Last month, the Minnesota Senate approved a bonding bill that would provide $37.5 million for the Northstar Corridor. The Northstar Corridor’s 40-mile first phase would run along highways 10 and 47 between Minneapolis and Big Lake, Minn. Under a proposed second phase, the line would extend from Big Lake to St. Cloud.
