Northstar Corridor station construction begins in Minnesota

Yesterday, Northstar Corridor officials broke ground on the Coon Rapids-Riverdale station, marking the start of station construction for the 40-mile Minneapolis-to-Big Lake, Minn., commuter-rail line.

The facility will feature an enclosed and heated pedestrian bridge over the tracks, automated ticket vending machines, on-demand heating in covered and enclosed platform shelters, bicycle lockers and security cameras on the platforms.

During the next several months, the agency will begin to build stations in Big Lake, Elk River, Anoka and downtown Minneapolis. Construction already has begun on a vehicle maintenance facility in Big Lake.

The Northstar Corridor is scheduled to open in late 2009.
