The province of Ontario recently approved Metrolinx's "Five in 10 Plan," enabling the Toronto agency to complete all five of its proposed "Big Five" transit projects during the next 10 years, Metrolinx officials said in a prepared statement.
With provincial approval in hand, Metrolinx signed a contract with Bombardier Transportation for the purchase of 182 light-rail vehicles.
The Five in 10 Plan outlines a structure for completing the Big Five transit projects by 2020 while saving $3.9 billion in the first five years from the original timeline, Metrolinx officials said. One component of the plan is to purchase the light-rail vehicles over the next 10 years for four provincially-funded light-rail projects: the Sheppard East line, Eglinton Crosstown line, Finch line, and Scarborough line replacement and extension.
In addition, the Big Five projects include bus rapid transit improvements.
