Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx have awarded a $757.1 million contract to Strabag International to design, build and finance the tunnel for the Scarborough Subway Extension.

Strabag will handle construction while Arup Canada Inc. and Brian Isherwood & Associates Ltd. perform design work. Preparatory work at the launch shaft site started in April and major construction is set to begin in June.

The Scarborough Subway Extension will create thousands of jobs during construction and increase access to employment spaces, schools and other destinations throughout the city, according to a news release.

The three-stop subway will extend service from Kennedy Station to Sheppard Avenue and McCowan Road, providing transit for those heading in and out of the downtown core and those traveling within Scarborough. The extension is slated for completion in 2029 or 2030.
