The Ontario government has broken ground on the final tunnel segment of the Eglinton Crosstown West Metrolinx light-rail extension.

Once completed, the 5.6-mile light-rail line will run from Scarborough to Mississauga with seven new stations,  Ontario officials said in a press release. This extension will connect more than 37,500 people to other regional transit services such as UP Express and GO Transit.

The Ontario government is prioritizing reducing gridlock and shortening commutes in the greater Toronto area, Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria said. Construction and engineering crews recently began excavating the tunnels under Eglinton Avenue West from Jane Street to the future Mount Dennis Station.

In June 2024, the province completed tunneling on the western underground portion of the Eglinton Crosstown West extension from Renforth Drive to Scarlett Road, where the LRT will transition to an elevated guideway, currently under construction.
