Ontario plots GO Transit grade separation project

Ontario is partnering with the Canadian federal government to fund the Lakeshore East/West Grade Separation project, which is aimed at enhancing GO Transit rail service along the Lakeshore East and West corridors.

The project calls for the construction of overpasses or underpasses at road/rail junctions, including three road-under-rail grade separations along the Lakeshore East Corridor.

In addition to mitigating traffic congestion, the initiative is aimed at supporting future work to implement Ontario's Regional Express Rail program and improving commuter safety.

The federal government plans to cover up to $100 million (in Canadian dollars) of the project's cost, while Ontario will be responsible for the remaining $200 million, Canadian government officials said in a press release.

The grade separation project is part of the New Building Canada Plan, which is the largest and longest federal infrastructure program in the country's history. Under the plan, the federal government is committing to provide $53 billion to support provincial, territorial and municipal infrastructure between 2014 and 2024.

"Our unprecedented public transit investments are making transit a better choice for commuters," said Ontario Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca in a statement. "This is further proof of our government's commitment to making the daily commute more convenient and the quality of life better for Ontario families."
