Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx this week released a request for proposals to Crosslinx Transit Solutions and Crosstown Transit Partners, the teams short-listed to design, build, finance and maintain the Eglinton Crosstown light-rail transit (LRT) line. The teams now will begin preparing their proposals, which are required to include plans for increasing apprenticeship training, creating opportunities for local companies to participate, and ensuring a design process that minimizes the impact of construction on traffic and nearby business, Ontario Ministry of Transportation officials said in a press release."We are moving forward on the province’s largest public transit construction project in more than half a century," said Glen Murray, Ontario's transportation minister. "The new Eglinton Crosstown LRT line will get commuters to work, school and play faster than ever before — up to 60 percent faster than today."The selected team will be responsible for maintaining the stations and trackwork for 30 years. The winning proposal is expected to be chosen next year. The new LRT line will run about 12 miles along Eglinton Avenue and feature up to 25 stations. More than six miles will be underground. Since 2002, Ontario has invested more than $19.3 billion (in Canadian dollars) on public transit, including $9 billion in GO Transit, provincial officials said.
