The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) has launched a $430 million program to upgrade stations, track and other critical equipment on the 116-year-old Port Authority Trans-Hudson Corp. (PATH) rail system.
The two-year program calls for the repair or replacement of infrastructure throughout the system, including rail cars, bridges, tracks and track switches, PANYNJ officials said in a press release. At four PATH stations, renovation workwill include upgrades to floors, ceilings, stairways and electrical systems.
Work is already underway at the Grove Street Station, where the first phase of station rehabilitation work was completed in March and the second phase began April 6. Eastbound trains will bypass the station on weekends to accommodate the ongoing work through late June.
Upgrades will also be completed at the Hoboken, Exchange Place and Newport stations, and at PATH's lift bridge over the Hackensack River.
Some portions of the PATH system are showing their age, said PANYNJ Executive Director Rick Cotton.
"We're fast-tracking our efforts to modernize the system and make sure riders have a smooth trip as we renew our infrastructure, refurbish our trains and refresh our stations," he said.
