PATH opens new Harrison station

The Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) commuter-rail system on Tuesday opened a modernized station in Harrison, New Jersey.

The updated stop features glass-enclosed, weather-protected entrances, along with elevators, widened stairs and escalator access to the platform. The station also includes an extended platform to accommodate longer, 10-car trains on the Newark-WTC Line in the future.

Additionally, the station features one of PATH's first countdown clocks to let passengers know when the next train will arrive.

The station opening marked the completion of the first phase of a $256 million station redevelopment project aimed at improving travel for the thousands of passengers who use the facility each day, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey officials said in a news release.

The station redevelopment also is part of a broader commercial and real estate development occurring across Harrison, they added. The developments include new residential buildings, the new Red Bull Arena soccer stadium and improved public spaces.
