The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) recently announced that Port Authority Trans-Hudson Corp.'s (PATH) new Total Access PATH Payment (TAPP) system has been used more than 10 million times since the tap-to-pay system was launched as a pilot program in December 2023.

In addition, TAPP adoption rates have risen to more than half of all fare entries since the first readers were installed at the end of 2023, PANYNJ officials said in a press release. TAPP has been available at all New York and New Jersey PATH stations since May 2024.

Passengers can use TAPP to pay fares at select turnstiles with a contactless debit/credit card, smartphone or wearable device instead of PATH-issued SmartLink cards or pay-per-ride MetroCards that have been in use since 2008.

During July, riders entering the Christopher Street station in New York were the biggest TAPP users, with 59% using the system. In addition, 57% of riders entering the 33rd Street terminal station chose to use the new fare payment option.

“Ten million served is a big achievement for PATH and reflects how quickly and readily our riders have responded to TAPP,” said PATH General Manager and Director Clarelle DeGraffe.
