Representatives from American Rail Passenger Coalition (ARPC), National Association of Rail Passengers (NARP) and Railway Progress Institute (RPI) plan to hold a rally May 8 in Washington, D.C., to urge Congress to support adequate funding for intercity passenger rail.



Participants plan to visit lawmakers’ offices and present a resolution urging support of and adequate funding for intercity passenger rail. The resolution, which states signatories’ belief in the importance and benefits of rail travel, and Amtrak’s undercapitalization, urges Congress to grant the national passenger railroad at least $1.2 billion in fiscal-year 2003, and commit itself to provide stable and adequate funding for the national passenger rail network, and development of designated high-speed rail corridors.



Nearly 40 organizations signed the resolution, including: the cities of Plano, Ill., and Rugby, N.D.; passenger rail associations from Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio, Washington, Virginia and Wisconsin; United Transportation Union; Rail Labor Division of the Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO; Sierra Club; Environmental Defense; Friends of the Earth; National Association of Counties; National Conference of State Legislatures; U.S. Conference of Mayors; High Speed Ground Transportation Association; and American Association of Private Railroad Car Owners.
