Yesterday, New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced Howard Permut will succeed Peter Cannito as president of MTA Metro-North Railroad when Cannito retires on July 15.

Currently Metro-North’s vice president of planning, development and procurement, Permut was part of the original team that created Metro-North in 1983 out of Conrail’s commuter operations in New York and Connecticut. Under his leadership, Metro-North has created programs to improve and expand train scheduling, market current and new services, and develop strategies to increase station access via parking spaces and multi-modal connecting services.

Permut also has fostered and maintained relationships with the Connecticut Department of Transportation and New Jersey Transit, and created new service opportunities with the New York State Department of Transportation, Amtrak and local municipalities, MTA said.

“Howard has been part of Metro-North’s creation and rebirth, and his experience and unique perspective more than qualify him to lead Metro-North into the future,” said MTA Executive Director and Chief Executive officer Elliot Sander in a prepared statement.

Permut began his career in 1975 as manager of capital programs with the Northeast Illinois Regional Transportation Authority. He joined MTA in 1979 as senior policy planner.
