Port Authority of Allegheny County marks golden anniversary

The Port Authority of Allegheny County will spend 2014 commemorating its 50th anniversary, agency officials announced.

The authority began operation in March 1964. It was created in 1959 when the Pennsylvania Legislature authorized the consolidation of 33 private transit carriers, many of which were failing financially, authority officials said in a history summary posted on its website.

The authority employs 2,400 people who operate and maintain light-rail, bus and paratransit services for 215,000 riders daily.

By combining fare structures and centralizing operations, the authority established the first unified transit system in Allegheny County, Pa.

The agency will announce activities to be held throughout the year to commemorate the anniversary, authority officials said.
