The Maryland Department of Transportation-Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) signed framework agreements with Delaware Transit Corp. (DART First State) and the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) for the potential future expansion of MARC commuter-rail service to Newark, Delaware, and Alexandria, Virginia, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore announced last week.
The agreements outline the next steps to advancing discussions and exploring pilot service opportunities.
Creating a seamless continuation of MARC service both north and south of Maryland is a critical component of transforming the agency from a local commuter-rail service provider to a regional rail service provider, Maryland state officials said.
“Maryland is committed to working with our neighbors to increase convenient and accessible transit across the entire region because we know an expanded transit network leads to expanded opportunities for everyone,” Moore said in a press release. “The partnerships outlined in these agreements will help us bring greater options to thousands of potential transit riders.”
MDOT MTA and DART First State plan to engage with regional stakeholders and agencies to help determine operational and infrastructure needs. One goal is to create a seamless connection between MARC's and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority’s systems.
MDOT MTA also plans to continue coordinating efforts with the VPRA, Virginia Railway Express (VRE), Amtrak and CSX. Future service depends on completion of the Long Bridge spanning the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., to Virginia, as well as other related fourth-track projects in the nation's capital and northern Virginia.
In addition, Maryland officials will work with VRE leaders to improve existing connections at Washington Union Station.
