Rail News: Passenger Rail

Power outage halts passenger-rail service in Northeastern cities

Rail service in several major East Coast and Canadian cities was stopped cold Aug. 14 after a massive power outage.

As power slowly returns Aug. 15, some transit agencies are suspending train operations, while others are resuming some service.

Morning rush hour service was not available on some New Jersey Transit lines, but the agency is following a reduced Saturday schedule. Newark City Subway and Hudson-Bergen light rail are operating regular weekday service.

NJ Transit is encouraging passengers to avoid train travel unless absolutely necessary, according to a prepared statement.

Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) expects to restore rail service by noon Aug. 15. All GCRTA buses are operating, but agency officials expect some delays.
