Innovations in Transportation Inc. (INIT), in partnership with Sound Transit, has launched open, contactless payment technology in the One Regional Card for All (ORCA) fare system used by six Puget Sound-area transit agencies in Washington.

Sound Transit, King County Metro, Community Transit, Everett Transit, Kitsap Transit and Pierce Transit all use the ORCA system for bus, ferry and light-rail transit options. The new technology enables riders to "tap and ride" using a contactless credit or debit card or mobile wallet to pay fares, according to an INIT press release.

INIT implemented the contactless payment technology as the region's transit agencies prepare for increased ridership during the six FIFA World Cup 2026 matches to be held in Seattle in June and July. An estimated 750,000 fans are expected to visit the region during the matches, INIT officials said.

"Open payments reduce barriers and make transit the easy choice for everyday riders and visitors alike," said ORCA Director Chris McKnight. "By partnering with INIT, people can now ride with the cards and devices they already carry."

INIT is also launching contactless, regional payment systems for transit agencies in other FIFA World Cup 2026 host cities, including Houston and Atlanta, INIT officials said.
