Rail supplier updates from GE Transportation, Bombardier, Alstom, Gannett Fleming and Parsons Brinckerhoff (May 31)

• GE Transportation officials announced yesterday that the company has chosen Chicago as the site for its global headquarters. The move will occur in the coming months after an office location has been finalized. The headquarters for GE Transportation’s locomotive business and key manufacturing and engineering site will remain in Erie, Pa. “Chicago allows us to more efficiently reach and serve customers around the world in the rail, mining and marine industries,” said Lorenzo Simonelli, GE Transportation president and chief executive office, in a prepared statement.
• This week, Bombardier Transportation and its customer, National Express, received the Supplier of the Year award at the Global AirRail Awards ceremony in Stockholm. The judges recognized Bombardier’s partnership approach with the operator, National Express East Anglia, to replace its old rolling stock with Class 379 trains on the Stansted Express rail link between London Liverpool Street station and Stansted Airport, according to a press release. Also, Bombardier introduced a new application of its PRIMOVE technology. The system, which has been installed in a pilot demonstration area of the Augsburg tram network in Germany, is designed to transfer power without the use of overhead wires. In addition, the company now is testing its Flexity tram in Bratislava, Slovakia.
• Alstom and Europorte, the freight-rail subsidiary of the Eurotunnel Group, have signed a partnership agreement for the maintenance of 17 Alstom-manufactured Prima locomotives now operated by Europorte. The agreement calls for the two partners to improve the management and availability of the Europorte locomotive fleet.
• Gannett Fleming has appointed Andrew Christofas project control specialist in San Francisco. He will provide project controls and risk assessment for major transit and rail projects. Christofas has more than 10 years of project controls and management experience. His areas of expertise include risk, schedule and cost management overhead cost management; and business systems analysis across the transportation, aerospace and defense industries.
• Parsons Brinckerhoff has named Jeff Mann manager-special projects in the firm’s Transit and Rail Technical Center in Raleigh, N.C. He will be responsible for assisting clients with planning and the development and management of transit and rail projects. Prior to joining the firm, Mann was an assistant vice president of policy and development in the south region for Amtrak. He also previously served as property and public affairs manager for the North Carolina Railroad Co.
