Refurbished MBTA Green Line trolleys back in service

The first of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's (MBTA) refurbished Green Line trolley cars re-entered service last week, with another car expected to begin service soon, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) announced.

A total of 86 trolley cars are undergoing rehabilitation work, which is aimed at preserving the integrity of the vehicles' structures, roofs and exteriors. The cars have undergone water damage and corrosion over the last 25 years, MassDOT officials reported on the department's blog.

"This is a great first step in our ongoing efforts to improve service on the country’s oldest light-rail line," said MBTA's Interim General Manager Frank DePaola in a prepared statement.

Specific rehabilitation work includes upgraded heating and cooling systems, motor alternators, auxiliary lighting, cab equipment, and door open indicators; replacement of flooring, seats and insulation; and overhauling door systems, braking equipment and propulsion systems.

Alstom is carrying out the $104 million rehabilitation project for MBTA's Green Line trolley cars, according to MassDOT.
