Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) Chief Executive Officer Phil Washington has endorsed a congestion pricing system for the region's public transportation network.

Washington told Metro's board last week that such a pricing system would encourage more people to use transit-rail and other forms of public transportation, according to a report in Curbed.

Although the details of congestion pricing have yet to be spelled out, such a system would ultimately change the way people move around Los Angeles, Washington said, according to the article.

"We think that with congestion pricing done right, we can be the only city in the world to offer free transit service in time for the 2028 Olympics," said Washington.

He endorsed the idea while presenting the board with a report on funding options for Metro's "Twenty-eight by 28 Initiative," completing 28 transportation projects ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in Los Angeles

Metro's board last month adopted the initiative as official policy. The board is expected to consider a financial plan for the initiative at its February 2019 meeting.
