The Biden administration is moving ahead on approving the Gateway tunnel project to replace the Hudson River rail tunnels, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee yesterday.
The project involves construction of new rail tubes under the Hudson River. The existing tubes, which are over a century old and were severely damaged during Hurricane Sandy in 2012, are used by Amtrak and commuter trains operating between New Jersey and New York. The project long has been a high priority for Amtrak, said commuter-rail officials and federal lawmakers from both states.
Buttigieg told committee members that the U.S. Department of Transportation hope to complete the project's long-delayed environmental impact statement by the end of June, according to a report by nj.com.
"I share your sense of urgency," Buttigieg told the committee, according to the website. "This is a regional issue but one of national significance because if there was a failure in one of those tunnels, the entire U.S. economy would feel it."
