Rhode Island awarded federal highway grant for Warwick Station, bridge projects

The Federal Highway Administration has awarded Rhode Island $4.1 million in grants for three transportation improvement projects, including a transit plan for Warwick Station, an Interstate-95 bridge reconstruction and a bridge replacement over Roaring Brook, Gov. Lincoln Chafee announced last week.

Specific projects awarded funding include $400,000 for the Warwick Station’s transit-oriented development/economic development implementation plan, which focuses on building a brand identity for a Warwick Station/InterLink intermodal district connecting to T.F. Green Airport. The plan will define the hub’s selling points to developers, corporate site selectors and transit riders, a press release issued by the governor’s office stated.

“An integral part of Rhode Island’s economic expansion is the development and marketing of business-ready hubs, such as Warwick Station, that act as magnets for industries, businesses and jobs,” said Chafee.

Other projects include $3.3 million for reconstruction of the I-95 River Bridge in Providence and $360,000 for a construction project employing new replacement technology known as  “Bridge in Backpack” for the Browning Mill Bridge.
