Rhode Island officials to add commuter-rail stop at airport

Yesterday, Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chaffee and Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) officials announced plans to expand commuter-rail service Nov. 14, including a stop at T.F. Green International Airport in Warwick.
The new schedule nearly doubles the number of weekday stops on the Providence/Stoughton Line, RIDOT officials said in a prepared statement.
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) provides the commuter-rail service. The new station will be located at the airport’s InterLink. MBTA began service from Warwick to Providence and Boston in December 2010 with 11 weekday stops. The new schedule will include 20 weekday stops, and for the first time include service to and from the airport.
The T.F. Green Station is part of the $267 million InterLink project governed by RIDOT and the Rhode Island Airport Corp. InterLink features a rental car center, bus hub and parking garage.
Further expansion of commuter-rail service to the Wickford Junction Station in North Kingstown is expected to occur in 2012, RIDOT officials said.
