The average Caltrain rider, who is 37 years old, a college graduate and earns more than $100,000 per year, commutes to work at least four days a week. And these days, a majority of those riders give high marks to Caltrain’s commuter-rail service, according to recently released passenger survey results.
Based on more than 4,200 respondents to the survey conducted in October, weekday riders rated the agency’s service a 4.02 out of a possible 5.0 and weekend riders rated it a 4.13.
The survey showed 57 percent of Caltrain passengers are male and 43 percent are female. In addition, 74 percent of riders take the train to work, 12 percent use it for social outings and 9 percent for school. Thirty-eight percent of passengers take the train to avoid traffic, 28 percent to save money and 25 percent to help the environment.
