The Romanian State Railway SNTFC "CFR Calatori" S.A. April 9 signed a $270 million contract with Siemens Transportation Systems Group to supply 120 Desiro-type, two-car diesel multiple units (DMUs) and a spare-parts package, integrate production batches in Romania, and put the trains into revenue service. The railway also granted an option for 104 more trains.

The DMUs, which have 123 seats and standing room for 90 additional passengers, are designed to operate at 75 mph. Officials plan to use the trains on routes in the Greater Bucharest area, and between the cities of Arad, Oradea and Cluj.

Deliveries are scheduled to begin in November 2002 and conclude in 2007.
