‘Tis the season for travel, and with the biggest holidays on tap, transit agencies are in the midst of their busiest time of year. But along with the hustle and bustle comes stress and rudeness, according to results from a survey conducted by online travel site Travelocity.
Based on an informal canvass of 875 travel industry employees and 1,000 passengers who have traveled in the last 12 months found, the survey found that stressful travel conditions and a general decline in values have created problems between passengers and workers.
Sixty-five percent of passengers said rudeness is a serious problem in travel and 52 percent said rudeness is a major cause of stress, while 54 percent of travel industry employees said passenger rudeness is a major cause of their on-the-job stress and tension.
Almost half of workers said they witnessed a situation where disrespectful behavior could have escalated into a physical confrontation; 19 percent witnessed a situation where it actually did.
Sixty-two percent of travel industry personnel said they have seen their fellow workers being rude to passengers, and half admit to being impolite themselves. When that happens, 56 percent said they were rude because passengers provoked them.
