The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) late last week amended its capital budget for fiscal-year 2022 to add $95 million in funding made available through the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).
The funding increases the FY2022 capital budget to $713.85 million from $618.85 million.
"These critical infrastructure funds will help ensure [we] can support this region through the pandemic recovery and beyond,” said SEPTA Chairman Pasquale Deon Sr. in a press release.
Over the IIJA’s five-year lifespan, SEPTA expects to receive $500 million in additional federal formula funding. That will be reflected in the FY2023 capital budget that begins July 1 and the FY2023-2025 capital program, which is being developed, agency officials said.
In addition to infrastructure repairs and upgrades, the funding will allow SEPTA to accelerate design work for station accessibility upgrades on the Market-Frankford Line, Broad Street Line and Regional Rail. The additional investment in design will also ensure the agency is prepared for the federal competitive All Stations Accessibility Program, which is a new program funded under the federal infrastructure bill, SEPTA officials said.
The amendment allows the authority to immediately increase capital funding for the design and implementation of several major projects, which include a trolley modernization, King of Prussia Rail project and rail vehicle replacement.
