The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) has announced plans to develop a new vision for the Regional Rail commuter service through a yearlong analysis and public feedback process.
"Reimagining Regional Rail" will be an initiative of SEPTA Forward, the authority’s strategic plan. It will help revamp services and enable the agency to deliver a more seamless transit network, SEPTA officials said in a press release.
Through SEPTA Forward, the authority envisions regional rail as a foundational part of a unified and equitable transit network providing all kinds of trips. Reimagining Regional Rail will identify the infrastructure, equipment and operations policies needed to realize that vision.
"With Reimagining Regional Rail, nothing is off limits," said SEPTA General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Leslie Richards. "We are rethinking frequency, route lengths, fares, connections to buses and rail transit and more — all in the name of making Regional Rail more useful to more people."
The agency will work with people across the region between now and summer 2022 to better understand why riders choose Regional Rail. Those conversations will help identify a long-term vision and shorter-term improvements needed to services, schedules and fare polices, SEPTA officials said.
