The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) will increase Regional Rail service, adding 99 weekend trains and 24 weekday trains to its schedule effective Sept. 8.
The additions will restore weekday service to 80% of pre-COVID-19 service and weekend service to 84%, SEPTA officials said in a press release.
SEPTA will fully restore weekend hourly services, add off-peak services and more rail cars to certain overcrowded trains, restore the 30-minute weekend services to the Philadelphia International Airport, and add a connection from the airport line to the Manayunk/Norristown Line. Schedule adjustments will be made throughout the system for timing improvements.
SEPTA currently has 189 engineers and is on track to meet its goal of employing 213 engineers by next spring, SEPTA officials said.
Despite facing a $240 million annual budget deficit, SEPTA must move forward with critical investments, such as this Regional Rail service expansion, to make services more reliable for riders, said SEPTA CEO and General Manager Leslie Richards.
